A lot of things happened last week while we were at the GDC. Some things were good, and some were, well, let’s just say they were interesting. Regardless, the overall experience will be remembered fondly, at least until the next GDC rolls around. When that happens, the Destructoid crew will create new experiences, and new memories, slowly replacing the ones we gained from this year's GDC.
Now, while that may be the case for us at Destructoid, it certainly won't be the same for a good friend of ours: the Gamejew (a.k.a. Jonathan Mann). The reason being, is that this year, Jonathan had an experience that will make every future GDC he attends pale in comparison, because this year is the year he fulfilled his dream.
Allow me to explain; See, Jonathan's hero is none other than Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto (a name we're sure you're all familiar with), and Jonathan's dream has always been to find an opportunity to sing to Mr. Miyamoto a song that he had written specifically for him; a chance to express his thanks, if you will.
During the course of the GDC week, Jonathan had tried unsuccessfully many, many times to make this dream a reality, and had almost resigned himself to the idea that he wouldn't achieve his goal. After many failed attempts, though, and at the very last moment, Jonathan finally succeeded by cornering Miyamoto backstage at the Video Games Live concert (much to the chagrin of Shiggy's PR handlers) and belted out his tribute. As you can see in the video above, it was a defining moment in the Gamejew's life.
Now, this may not seem like such a big deal to you, but we've gotten to know Jonathan quite a bit over the course of the GDC, and not only is he a friend of the site (obviously), we also found out that he's an incredibly nice guy. Which is one of the reasons why we wanted to take the time to let you know how important this moment was for him, and to congratulate him on finally meeting (and serenading) his hero.
Living the dream, kids!
