Recently myself and several other Dtoid masterminds have been running a game of Diablo 2. One thing I can’t seem to understand about this game is that no matter how much it ages, it’s usually about a half hour in that I’m having such fun with it that I’ve forgotten it came out seven years ago. Yet the formula is so simple — point and click my way around and maim anything I can get my hands on. Since it’s release many games have come out proudly bearing a “Just like Diablo 2!!!” sticker, but nothing has really touched the popularity of the original game. Fan sites buzz with hope, but there’s no confirmation from Blizz just yet.
Since I can’t blame the popularity of it on a rich storyline or amazing graphics, I’m wondering what the magic ingredient in Diablo 2 is that makes PC players go back to it again and again after so many years. Deckard Cain’s Sean Connery impression? Wirt’s leg? Personally, I experience strong sexual arousal in the cow level, but I certainly don’t expect that from the rest of you. Fess up: why do you still get the urge to kill Baal & Friends again and again? Or if not Diablo, what’s the old school game that you love to replay?
