They did it. They finally got me seriously hooked on a free-to-play, browser-based game. With something that feels an awful lot like a modern take on Herzog Zwei, of all things. Before I know it, this crazy dream could end with me putting up real money to unlock pay-walled digital goods. The horror.
The game I’m referring to here is AirMech, and the aforementioned “they” are Carbon Games, a studio made up of people who worked on Fat Princess. It only takes a few minutes to see the connections, and on that note, I still can’t believe this runs in a browser.
If you like real-time strategy in theory but find yourself wanting to take on an active role in combat — in the case of AirMech, as a transforming mech — this’ll be right up your alley. For the time being, you will need to download Chrome to play, but it’s worth doing. Lastly, it sounds like Carbon has plans for a dedicated PC version and more down the road. I can’t wait.
