8 easiest skills to 99 in Old School RuneScape

Not everything's a grind.

Reaching 99 in an Old School RuneScape skill is one of the game’s peak achievements. Everyone remembers their first 99, no matter which one it is.

While Old School RuneScape has no shortage of grindy skills to max out, not everything in the game is like this. Much like in real life, having a ton of money in OSRS allows you to take a quicker, easier route for many things, including reaching 99 in certain skills. This isn’t the case for every skill, but it can definitely help at times.

Construction

Construction is perhaps Old School RuneScape‘s biggest money sink. Trained entirely in your player-owned house, this skill is easy to get to 99, so long as you’ve got a healthy amount of GP to spare.

Construction isn’t AFK at all, which is a shame. The good news is that the XP rates are so fast, you won’t even mind the quick grind to 99. Building mahogany tables and gnome benches yields 900,000 and 1.1 million XP per hour respectively, so rinse and repeat either of these methods until you’ve got the skillcape. It couldn’t be easier if you can stomach the eye-watering cost of approximately 200 million GP required to buy the mahogany planks.

Cooking

Cooking won’t be the fastest 99 on this list, but there’s a reason that it’s the first for so many players. It’s low-effort, very AFK, and inexpensive. Put a movie or TV show on a second monitor, and it won’t be long until you’re wearing that fancy skillcape.

There’s no unique method to reach 99 Cooking – just cook the best fish possible and watch the levels go up. As an example, cooking sharks nets you around 300,000 XP per hour, which is enough to feel like you’re always making decent progress. Nothing too fancy here, which is why it makes this list.

Crafting

Crafting is a skill that Jagex hasn’t really touched in years. As a result, there’s a clearly defined meta to reaching 99 Crafting, making it one of the easiest skills to max in Old School RuneScape.

Crafting dragonhide bodies comfortably offers the best XP rates in this skill. At level 84, you’ll unlock black dragonhide bodies, with which you can earn over 400,000 XP per hour. It’s a bit of a grind, but compared to many of the game’s other skills, it feels like a walk in the park.

Farming

You may be confused as to why Farming is on this list. It’s a skill that, by design, can only be trained a few minutes per day, which might trick you into thinking it’s a difficult 99. On the contrary, this is the exact reason why it’s one of the easiest.

To get 99 Farming, you should do two daily tree runs. This involves planting the highest-level tree, fruit tree, hardwood tree sapling, calquat tree, celastrus tree, crystal tree, and redwood tree possible around Gielinor. These runs should take you around five minutes each time, and at the highest-tier trees planted, can give over 200,000 XP per run. Even if you’re pretty inconsistent, you can get 99 Farming in a few months without thinking about it. In terms of time investment when actively training, there’s no quicker or easier 99 in Old School RuneScape.

Fletching

Fletching is similar to Cooking. It’s not the fastest skill to reach 99 in, but it’s so AFK that you’ll barely even notice. Ask any Old School RuneScape player their first 99, and we’d bet half would say Fletching.

Fletching the highest-level arrows and javelins possible is your best bet here. When you can make Dragon arrows and javelins, you’ll earn almost 700,000 XP per hour, making the final levels of this road to 99 Fletching very easy.

Herblore

Herblore isn’t just quick to train, but it’s useful, too. With this skill, you’ll make potions, which you can use throughout the game or sell on the Grand Exchange. Either way, you’re getting something out of it.

With Herblore, some potions are better than others. For example, the Ancient Brew yields rates of around 500,000 XP per hour, while the higher-leveled Super Combat Potion is only around 325,000 XP per hour. Regardless, Herblore XP rates are solid when compared to the more grindy skills the game offers, so you can’t go too wrong.

Prayer

It’s not exactly a secret that Prayer is one of the easiest 99s in Old School RuneScape. So why have so few players actually achieved it? The answer is simple: money.

If you want to be fast about it, offering bones to a lit gilded altar in a player-owned house can give you around 1.3 million XP per hour, assuming you’re using Superior Dragon Bones. One slight issue, though. This can cost you approximately 50 million GP per hour, meaning you’ll spend hundreds of millions to reach 99. You can use standard Dragon Bones to considerably reduce the cost and XP rate, but we’re here to discuss the easiest routes to 99. If your funds are unlimited, Prayer is an easy 99 to achieve in Old School RuneScape.

Ranged

You may wonder why Ranged appears on this list while no other combat skill does. While, for the most part, it’s a pretty slow skill to train, Ranged has one specific training method that makes it an easy 99 to achieve.

At level 45 Ranged, you can use chinchompas against maniacal monkeys. You’ll need to start Chapter 2 of the Monkey Madness 2 OSRS quest before you can do this, but it’s by far and away the quickest way to reach 99 Ranged. Maniacal monkeys respawn quickly, and with chinchompas, you deal tons of area-of-effect damage against them. The only kicker with this is that it gets expensive, fast. At its most efficient, you’ll earn upwards of 900,000 XP per hour, making this one of the best training methods for any skill in the entire game.
