About Me
My name is Wilmar, I'm 26 and live in Boston.

I'm a compulsive gamer, I tend to start games and not finish them. Currently working on a rather long backlog of games to which I may actually make a dent into this year!

Things I enjoy in no particular order include Video Games, Comic books, Sci-Fi/Fantasy books, 80s Action Movies, WarHammer 40k stuff and playing the occasional Magic the Gathering game.

Some of my favorite games include but are not limited to:
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Ys: Oath in Felghana
Super Street Fighter 4
Singularity
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron
Batman: Askham Asylum
Jamestown
Tribes: Ascend

Unfinished games, and my slow fight against a growing backlog
Nova Prime | 5:21 PM on 05.02.2012 2 comments

[This is part of my work towards fully motivating myself to destroy my backlog and have some fun in the process, possibly even learn how to write properly! Be advised that this may contain spoilers so huh yeah]

You're probably just like me a person who loves gaming and has found yourself with a large backlog of games you want to play. But be it work, school, friends or even a family, you have very little to play them and have this reached the point where it's just more work to play old games than it is to just buy a new one and play that instead. Let's face it, Steam and it's fantastic Summer, Holiday, Winter and the Midweek sales don't help and great games these day come out all the time. With all of this in mind who wants to bother attempting to go back and finish that game you played through like halfway or a game you got for like 5 bucks. I sure didn't but recently I've been finding myself wanting to explore more gameplay and stories, and I can't do that by sticking to my regular rotation of games. So that's where this little space of the internet comes in, to form some sort of motivation and perhaps consensus as to what I should play next.

Yes, I circled the 60% off twice...it's important!

Recently I decided to put a stop to my lazy ways and just work on my backlog for a while, so far I've managed to put a couple of games away, and even though the end is not in sight yet I can't let that stop me from working at it. There will be temptations down the road, some of the games coming out look great or just plain fun, that and I have some already pre-ordered...

MUST PERSEVERE!

Back to my original point, I've actually already started making some progress. Slowly chipping away at an already out of control backlog can be a daunting task, and usually can lead to getting disheartened and just stopping altogether. Below you'll find a bit of my experiences with each title.

First up is Vanquish!

This game was actually pretty great, it had everything I could have wanted from a game, 3rd person shooter? Check. Over the top action? Check. Sweet looking armored suits? Check. So why did it take me about 3 months to finish it? Because Arkham City came out and being a Batman fan I couldn't pass that up. In the end I had more fun with Vanquish, which is a bit odd since they are very different games, but the new Batman offering didn't really do much for me ( it was still a pretty good game ).

Fast forward a couple of months since I sorta got lost in the shuffle of new game releases as well as my constant hunt for older or cheaper games. I mean how can I pass up a copy of Phoenix Wright Trials and Tribulations for 18 bucks, yes I just added to my problem, but at least I won't have to fish for it on eBay at some point later down the line.

Second in line is Assassin't Creed 2!

Ok, so I originally got this for my brother brand new for his birthday when it first came out so let's see it was released on November 17th of 09, his birthday is February 26. I found the game still in the shrink wrapper last December. Ok so he doesn't play games that much the jerk could have at least made it look like he wanted to play it just to humor me. Anyways, I started the game, was blown away by all the improvements and new ways to take out enemies. This game then fell by the wayside for about 4 months due to work but I finally finished it last week. Some gripes aside it was pretty alright, and I'll be jumping on Brotherhood soonish. Spoilers incoming! The last couple of hours were a let down though, from the fight at the dock area to the one in the Vatican. It really just felt crammed in at the last minute and I just wanted it to be over. The after credits scene partially made up for it.End Spoilery section!

Usually when I finish I game I like to revel in the fact that I can see the credits roll and sort of just reflect on the experience, was the game good? did I have fun playing it? what was memorable about it? things like that. Sometimes I would love to play through something again, and now days that's not as likely to happen, one game comes to mind right away, Singularity a game which you should all have played but you probably didn't because you're all jerks who hate good games or just didn't have the money. A semi recent exception to this was Saint's Row: The Third, again another example of something I knew I'd enjoy, a 3rd person action game, over the top missions and a crazy fun Coop. I actually started a new game and got a good way through before stopping and getting back to my Backlog.

Seriously play it! I may even gift it to a couple of you.

The 3rd game I've finished recently (this past weekend actually) was Alan Wake!

So right away the game sorta starts off by setting the tone when you get to Brightfalls on a small get away with your wife and you make a quick stop at the local Diner where things kick off. I really liked the atmosphere this game set up, when I was running in the forest at night I really felt scared, always hoping I could reach the next light source for safety and making sure I always had a couple of flash-bangs and flares just in case. I actually stopped playing this game on 8/28/11 and picked it back up on 4/25/12, so by far the longest stretch out of the games I've mentioned so far, but a coworker kept nagging at me to finish it, so after finishing AC2 this was a clear choice. Spoilers incoming! The last bits were really great but the ending just left me wanting more, the used copy I got still had a working code for The Signal DLC which I also finished and it was alright, I'm waiting for The Writer the 2nd DLC pack to go on sale.End Spoilery section! I'm tempted to try out American Nightmare but I'm going to wait since I'm currently playing another backlog game.

And lastly, the game I'm currently playing is Viking: Battle for Asgard!

Had to reach into the way back machine for this one. Some of you may have seen this in the used game section at Gamestop for like 5 bucks, I bought this brand new when it came out back when I was in college. A buddy of mine and I got sorta hyped by it and picked it up, I got about midway through this one before putting it down years ago. The combat is okay, but it's pretty violent and sorta satisfying when you kill a Giant. I completely forgot about this each island you start off in has to be liberated in a huge battle before you move on, and the amount of enemies on screen at a given time can be a bit staggering, for an older game it did really good on this end.

So that's it for this entry, I should have another as soon as I make some head way in a couple more games. As a parting note I will ask you guys for some input, first on this my real first C-blog and second which of these fine games should I play once I'm done with Viking?

Red Dead Redemption for PS3, I was about half-way before I stopped, also have the Undead Nightmare DLC
Thor: God of Thunder for DS, I'm on the 3rd stage. It was made by Wayforward!
Borderlands for PS3, still sorta early on. Don't have any DLC for this one.

A better Intro than my original!

So I've been coming to Destructoid for about a year now, (you may have seem me around making a random comment on a news article or a thread in the forum) it was more for news than anything else. As time went on I found the Podtoid, which interested me quite a bit. The more I visited the site, the more I learned about the community, I found the C-blogs one day while bored at work and then the forums. The one thing that stood out the most was how involved everyone is as well as how awesome the people here are.

So I decided to get involved, which led me to creating a forum account and making a few comments here and there. This leads to the main reason for this writing, my Double Down. I've had the idea for sometime but just needed to get the parts together for it which you can see below:

So here we have 2 Crunchwrap Supreme's, a Whopper Jr., some French Fries and some left over Nachos from the ride back home.

1. Putting this thing together!

2. Adding Fries, Ketchup and Mild Sauce from Taco Bell.

3. Finished the assembly!

4. Side shots are good.

5. My friend Mike joined me on this adventure.

6. Me taking a bite from this.

7. Forgot to take more progress pics but here's the Half-way mark.

8. Last bits, the end to this amazing meal

To be honest this was actually not bad, in no way do I regret eating this. My friend Mike and I are currently planning another one of this, I may take pictures of that too.
