Destructoid - Dtoid PS3 FNF's Community Blog

About Me
Welcome to the home of PS3 Friday Night Fights here at Destructoid.

FNF is a weekly event here at Destructoid where we, community members, cooperate with or murder each other online. There is a forum thread for planning and then a blog post with the final schedule each week both here and on the Dtoid front page. Keep an eye out for them if you want to play some games.

If you are new to the whole thing, check this out: FNF FAQ: Everything you need to know (but never asked) about Friday Night Fights

Blog Hosts

Trev
CornflakeJustice

If you'd like to get your name added to this list, variety is good and we could always use the help posting things. Send a PM to one of the current hosts to get more information.

Other Fights

If you don't have a PS3 or can't handle the timezone disparity, give one of the other FNF flavors a try.

Let's Be Friends

Never let it be said that FNF ain't down with all the hip kids and their socializing compunetworks.

The Guide

To Play
• Keep yourself up to date on the schedule. The list in the forums can change several times throughout the week.

• Leave a message with your PSN name and which games from the schedule you want to play. More people will play if other people are playing, so speak up.

• Send a PSN friend request to the person hosting the game which includes a message with your Dtoid name. If you leave out who you are on the site, they might think you're just a random friend request and ignore you.

To Host
• If you want your game listed on the schedule, we need the game, the time, and your PSN ID. We need the specific game, not an abbreviation that applies to more than one; a start time, even if you're playing "all night"; and we need your PSN ID even if you think we know it already. If there is anything else, like lobby names, DLC requirements, or passwords, note that as well.

• Don't worry about hosting the same game or hosting a game at the same time as someone else. Instead, think of it like a movie theater; more than one game can run at the same time.

• Make sure you have at least an hour to play. That's only two or three matches of the average shooter and those go by pretty quick.

• Check the comments, on both the forum post and the cblog when it goes up on Friday, to see if someone has said they'll play. You might have missed their PSN message or your friend list might be full.

Noot noot, motherfuckers.

I have nothing to say about this picture.

On the other hand, Capcom has inadvertently tipped not just their hand, but the entire industry's. The party line is usually that on-disc DLC is content that was developed after the game but not certified with it. That's always rubbed me the wrong way; it's just too convenient. Here we have admission that it is, in fact, planned for at the start of the development process and done at the same time. It could just be part of the game, but isn't. I'll admit, that's reading a lot into it, but this "we're sort of sorry for gouging you and we're going to keep doing it, but please buy our game anyway" thing isn't good enough. If one does it and admits to it, I have no doubt that plenty of others do too.

I don't believe Capcom really understands what the problem is either. What they're going to do is just stop putting this content on the disc, because they imagine what we want to do is fill up our hard drives. What we want is to have all the stuff created given to us. Games are expensive and light on content. What we want is DLC that we ask for after playing the game. Put the hooks in there so it can be added, but stop breaking off parts of your games to sell to us later. That's exactly what his statement said to me. As though they made a list of weapons for the game and then came back later and made a second list for all the new additions; no, what they did is made one list and took part of it out. What's upsetting people is not how the content is delivered, it's when and how it's created.

Welcome to the PS3 side of Destructoid's Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the Destructoid community get together online to play games. FNF is an event run by and for the community, so everyone is welcome to join. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that might be required.

If you want to play, we need to know who you are. Leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN ID. You should also send a PSN friend request to the hosts, including a message to say who you are here on Destructoid so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.

If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, don't just sit there and whine about it. Anyone can host a game for FNF! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so we can put it on the schedule. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

All times Eastern.

MAG is a free PSN download and you can play as long as you want, but can't exceed level 8. Send a PSN note and I'll add you to my buddy list so you can easily get in the group. If you're new to the game it's much easier if you have a mic... 256 players in the game can seem a bit confusing at first!

That link is funny, but reasonably NSFW. I understand it may be offensive to some so you've been forewarned. If I had that picture of the guy from Arrested Development looking in the bag labeled Dead Pigeon I'd post that too.

Cornflake had a weird night, seriously strange, the conversations I had last night at the bar pale in comparison to the above link. Cornflake doesn't really have much to say beyond thanking all the fine folks for stepping up this week to get some awesome games hosted. I'll be taking over Dare's spot hosting Awesomenauts, more information about that on the blurb.

And folks, please remember that if you want to play a game with someone, you need to send the host a friend request.

Good Night, and Good Fights,

PS3 Friday Night Fights: Oh God Why Edition
Dtoid PS3 FNF | 1:08 PM on 04.27.2012 13 comments

I'm sorry.

I drank too much last night. I drank so much that I legitimately cannot find the bottle of rum I was drinking out of last night. I'm not sure if I finished it and threw it out somewhere or if I took it to bed with me, or if it's shattered somewhere. All I know is that it's not on the table in front of my gaming chair with the two bottles I didn't drink or in the freezer where it's supposed to be. It was half full when I started, this was after a couple beers and some whiskey at the bar, on a day with no carbs. Don't do that. Learn from my terrible experience. I woke up at 930 this morning and I shit you not, was still drunk. It's 230 as I write this and I'm not sure that I'm not still a little drunk. All I know is I have an absurd hangover and it hurts.

This post was literally lifted with minor edits from last weeks blog post because I cannot think that much. The most work I did for this post was find the above image, that's how hungover I am. I love doing this and I just couldn't. So thanks Trev for doing almost all of the work for the important schedule part of this post. You're amazing.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go back to work and deal with my asshole boss who doesn't seem to understand what it means to be hungover. I probably deserve this...

Hystzen is renting a Battlefield 3 server according to him it will be up around "11pm GMT probably just call it Destructoid FNF" if everything goes according to plan we will transition from our regular game into that this week and see how it goes. This should allow for more people from dtoid to play together and against each other more easily and may solve some of the squad size issues we've had in the past in terms of having multiple people playing together. If more than four people are interested in playing I suggest that we all turn on team chat in game rather than squad so we can do our generic bullshitting. It will be experimental but if it works we may try to do this on the regular. (We can get Destructoid to pay for that right?)

Based on what I understand of server rules, depending on who is in charge, either Hystzen or Cornflake (me) will need PSN names for people interested in playing on the server so we can assign you "VIP" status allowing you to get in the game even if the server is full.

Killzone 3 with Elsa

Yes. Blocking with that sword will help.

The servers for Demon's Souls are finally shutting down. Their life has been extended again and again due to the dedication of Players, but the sequel is out and I imagine the population is dwindling. Sales have likely been low for a long time, and Atlus isn't made of money. I appreciate how long they've lasted already. The bittersweet server message says it all.

From now until the shut down at the end of next month, I'll be getting people together for co-op and PvP. I've started a new character to co-op with people, but I can't level up any more until the first. We were going to start them then, but I got impatient and decided I could get my normal equipment runs (After 1-1, 4-1 for the cres. falcion, compound longbow, and adjudicator shield, 3-1 for the black leather armor) out of the way. If you've got the game, you should take the time to enjoy the amazing multiplayer before the game becomes (spectacular) single-player only while you can.

Umbasa.

This is kind of an odd post, since I won't technically be hosting (because someone will be summoning me) at all and we likely already have a three-man team filled out, but I'd be happy to help organize or play with new people anyway! We will organize which stages to play and where soul signs will be put down in a PSN chat. I have three characters at 130 and one at 21, and can access any stage with the high level characters, so let me know where and you've got a blue phantom. PS3 Friday Night Fights: Loot My Chest Edition
Dtoid PS3 FNF | 9:39 AM on 04.13.2012 11 comments

$150 for a Bobblehead and a Loot Chest? "Sweet! Wasn't expectin' that."

Whelp, it’s Friday. It’s also the 13th. Which means, shit, it’s Friday the 13th. You should be glad you’re getting one of these at all. Hell I might actually be dead for all you know. I don’t think I am, but I did have to go into work two hours early today. So that’s bullshit bad luck. Whatever.

Good news is that we’re fast approaching the days of Borderlands 2 a re-entry to the land of Pandora with opportunities for badassery and joy the likes of which will make you joy puke. With a recent confirmation of 96.5% more wub wub, but no dub step things are looking good. Gameplay videos look fun, the characters should be hilarious, and they just listed out what they’re offering in the collector’s edition. And near as I can tell it’s that loot chest and bobblehead. Not worth it at all, but of course I MUST HAVE IT FOR MY COLLECTION. GEARBOX IS ASSUMING DIRECT CONTR- I mean, sorry, got carried away there for a minute. It’ll go great with my collection of useless vidya game stuff!

In other amusing news I emailed Gearbox’s PR department regarding Gamestop’s “exclusive” Borderlands 2 DLC “Creature Slaughter Arena” turns out it’s not exclusive, just incentive to pre-order it through them. Fookin’ Morons. Anyway, I got a reply from Randy Pitchford so that was awesome, a short email exchange and I get thanked for holding a studio accountable to its fans and its integrity. Which in my book is just more points for Gearbox. So there’s that.

Gobbldigook is interested in getting some Skullgirls in, but he didn’t get me a time so I don’t know when. If you’re interested in playing with him you should let him know! With that I’m going to sign off because I’m doing this at work and I really need to get some stuff done. (Not really) See you in the fights!
